5 Bangkok Suburbs That Are Great Places to Live
If you have been coming to Thailand for holidays since you can remember and the time has come to relocate, you probably won’t wish to stay in the city of Bangkok for too long. The sheer expanse of Bangkok surprises many expats and with great infrastructure in place, getting around is easy; if you are looking to move to a greener environment, here are a few Bangkok suburbs that you might want to consider.
- Minburi – This was once the major fish market for Bangkok and despite ongoing development, Minburi and neighbouring Nong Chok are still very green. In 2024 a new BTS line opens that runs to Minburi, plus there are many private housing complexes where you can rent a mansion for a few hundred dollars a month. Less than 30 minutes on the BTS and you are at the hotel on Sukhumvit 11 Bangkok, what could be better than that? Nong Chok is on the road to Chachoensao and is a predominantly Muslim area, with agriculture being a main industry; fish farms and paddy fields are on both sides of the road.
- On Nut – If you turn left at Sukhumvit Soi 71 and continue down that road for 5km, you will arrive at On Nut, which is near Lat Krabang and only a few kilometres from Suvarnabhumi International Airport. There are many digital nomads that live in On Nut and there is a lively expat nightlife; one of the main benefits to moving away from the city centre is lower cost. Condo rentals are much cheaper once you get out of central Bangkok and transportation is cheap.
- Udom Suk – There are many traditional Thai massage parlours in this district, which is popular among young expats, which might be due to the live music venues that are open for most of the night. Where to start looking for apartments/houses for rent in and around Udom Suk? There are Bangkok Facebook groups where real estate agents post details of properties in the area. - Lad Phrao – This was once a Chinese stronghold and with many attractive housing areas, this is a great place to reside if you want to be close to many entertainment venues; check out Google Maps for real street views of Lad Phrao and every taxi driver knows this area. There are a few supermarkets dotted around and, of course, great street food, much like other parts of the city.
- Thonburi – Located on the Chao Phraya River, Thonburi has a lot going for it; Wat Arun is located here and with BTS stations, you are never far away from central Bangkok. Stylish condo developments set in beautiful grounds offer inexpensive living and there are several local markets where you can buy fresh produce.
